Club Med and voluntary CO₂ emissions offsetting

Aware that the holidays it offers have an impact on the environment and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, mainly through transport, Club Med is committed to taking action.

1 - Voluntary offsetting

What is offsetting ?

What is offsetting ?

Voluntary carbon offsetting reduces transport-related GHG emissions by an amount equivalent to those emitted.
While some emissions are "unavoidable", it is possible to offset their environmental impact by funding and supporting community and association projects to reduce emissions in developing countries.
To support it in this initiative, Club Med has chosen to partner with the Action Carbone programme run by the GoodPlanet foundation, chaired by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, and supported at its launch in 2006 by ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency).
Club Med has chosen to participate in non-renewable biomass and community projects, known as "diffuse emission reduction" projects, such as:

  • Dissemination of renewable energies for heating and cooking,
  • Improvement of the energy efficiency of equipment,
  • Development of new alternative energy solutions.

2 - Action carbone

What's the difference compared to the CO₂ emissions displayed ?

Action Carbone's carbon offsetting is more comprehensive.
The CO₂ emissions reported when booking flights comply with regulatory requirements, which only cover carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Action Carbone's offsetting is based on the ADEME's Bilan Carbone method, which takes into account all greenhouse gases and not just CO₂.

3 - Offset vs. solidarity tax

The difference with the solidarity tax

The difference with the solidarity tax

GHG emissions offsetting is independent of the solidarity contribution on airline tickets; the two initiatives are quite distinct:

  • GHG offsetting is paid to projects that generate GHG emission reductions
  • The solidarity levy is dedicated to supporting UNITAID, which works to provide people in developing countries with access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
  • Offsetting your CO₂ emissions is a voluntary measure, whereas the solidarity levy is mandatory.
