28 pickleballers from Toronto descended on Club Med Cancun on February 7th, and thoroughly enjoyed a week of PB, the beach, the water, and the great hospitality of Club Med. Fernando was the GO who arranged things for us, and he did a great job, including a wonderful beach dinner at the Taco Arte restaurant, and a fabulous steak dinner at La Estanchia.
CMC has the best location in Cancun. It's main beach is guarded by the rocky point, so the waters are calmer, and it gets far less seaweed than any other resort in the hotel zone. It is quite something to stand at CMC, and look at the hundreds of hotels and resorts stretching to the north as far as the eye can see! The unsheltered beach area to the south is where the snorkeling, and water vehicles (kayaks, paddleboards, Hobie cats, and jet skis are available) are. The snorkeling area is quite rocky, and the waves can be quite powerful; many people complained about being painfully dashed against the rocks.
Our room was lovely. The toilet had its own room, just inside the door. Not pleasant to look at when you first walk in, it nonetheless proves it worth when I found myself making frequent nightly trips. Next to it is a very nice washroom, with a walk in shower with both handheld and waterfall heads. Twin sinks, lots of vanity room, lots of towels. The room was very attractive, all teak and tile.
Across from the washrooms were the closets. One just contained the safe. There were two other full closets, one for each of us. There were ample hangers, and three sets of drawers, I was able to lay out my entire week's clothes in just a few minutes.
The room had a bed, a desk and chair, and a settee. There was a two step walkout to the ground, where we had a secluded area with two chairs and a table. Next to the door was a minifridge. Nothing was stocked, although 2 litre bottles of fresh water were always supplied every day. The maid kept the room for us beautifully, and we tipped her $30 US when we left. Those were the only tips that we gave out - I would have given one to the golf cart driver, Manuel, but I didn't see him the last two days. I have read complaints here that the rooms at CMC are 'tired'. Certainly, I didn't see all of them, but we stayed at the Granate building (5xxx suites), and I thought the rooms looked chic, clean, and comfortable.
Now, about the food. When you are cooking for 3,000 people, you have to aim for the middle. And since it's a family resort as well, you have to have things kids will eat, like chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and cereal. That said, if you took the time to look around, there were highlights at every meal. The composed salads were different and delightful each day. The various renditions of raw fish: sushi, sashimi, ceviche were always available. The roast beef was tender and flavourful. All of the portions were rather small, which was good, IMHO, because it let me sample more things. You can always go back!
The dinner at the steak house let me enjoy a picanha steak, one that is very hard to find at home. Everyone looked elegant in white that night, and we had a private beach side patio all to ourselves. Well, ourselves, and a small raccoon, who kept poking an inquisitive nose under the glass wall. Just a fun evening with good friends and great food.
You can do as little or as much as you want. I only visited the archery/trapeze/minigolf/trampoline area once (the minigolf needs a serious update). My girlfriend spent her time at the beach or on the PB court. I myself did a little too much, and had to retire on both Thursday and Friday from heat exhaustion and nausea. CMC stepped right in, and provided me with electrolytes to help get me back to health. Note to self: get in shape for your next vacation!
I don't know how to assess value any more. It was $500/pp per day. For that, I got my room, my food, my drinks, and all my recreation. We could have gone into the city or even just up to the beach to see the rest of the hotel zone, and we didn't bother. We were never bored. I marveled constantly at how well the grounds were kept, and how kind every one was. I thought it was a great vacation, marred only by my brief illness, which was my own fault.
