What you need to know before departure

A summer holiday in Spain? Caliente!
People often ask if August is the right time for a holiday in Andalusia. Yes, it's the busy season, so the most famous sites naturally receive lots of visitors. And Andalusia can be incredibly hot at this time of year. But does this apply throughout the region? Fortunately not!
While inland (places like Seville and Granada), temperatures can reach 45°C, the coast is much cooler. In Marbella on the Costa del Sol, there is a Mediterranean climate. Near the Strait of Gibraltar, you can enjoy sunshine along with pleasant summer temperatures. In August, this part of Andalusia doesn't tend to be hotter than 31°C.

What to visit in Andalusia

Places to escape the heat and crowds
Córdoba, Seville and Granada are all inland cities in Andalusia. They can be incredibly hot in the height of the summer. So, to avoid the crowds and the heat, we suggest other excursions:

  • River trekking at Guadalmina. This activity offered à la carte* by the Resort is refreshing, different and ideal in the height of summer with family. Discover the basics of canyoning, learn to abseil and even safely slide down the natural formations. *extra cost
  • Visit Málaga. The new cultural capital of Andalusia tends to enjoy a gentle sea breeze. Visit the Alcazaba, Picasso Museum and historic centre during your trip. Book this excursion at Club Med Magna Marbella direct.
  • And if you want another amazing trip out... Head off to the Málaga caves. This stunning city has many caves to explore. Cool Nerja will delight all ages: the natural architecture inside these caves is breathtaking. Listen to the audioguide and discover the history of the site and its inhabitants.

Enjoy Andalusian fiestas!

Flamenco, ferias and gastronomy
The Málaga Fair in August in unmissable and doesn't stop even when night falls. This feria celebrates the Catholic Monarchs' reconquest of the city from the Moors. In the day, there are lots of events: dancing, fortified wine tastings and food tastings. At night, superb fireworks are held on the beach. Throughout, concerts and shows are organised across the city. This event is absolutely unmissable!

If you visit Huelva in early August, don't miss the "Columbinas" festival. This celebrates Christopher Columbus's discovery of America and the celebrations change each year. A particular city or country in South America is featured annually and you can see flamenco dance festivals and even a corrida in the arenas.

Special festivals

For 150 years, Sanlúcar de Barrameda has hosted horse races. You can watch this free event from the beach and even place your bets. The races happen at sunset at low tide. When the temperature goes down and the sea goes out, the fun can begin.

In mid-August in Málaga, there is a special festival just for adults: the Wine Festival. On 15 August, you can enjoy Cómpeta fandango and verdiales singers sharing their traditions. This festival celebrates an ancient custom where winegrowers asked the Virgin to bless their harvest. It's a great opportunity to try Andalusian dishes and the previous year's wine!
