What happens in September?

Harvest month has plenty of surprises in store...
The end of summer is harvest time and celebrations are held throughout the Western world. Andalusia is no different with its ferias and corridas. Set off early in the morning for one of the celebrating towns and experience the local cultural traditions. In September, you can attend:

  • Harvest festival in Jerez de la Frontera: the Bulería festival starts in the arenas at 10pm and goes on until 4am. Also known as the Fiesta de la Vendimia, this event is a good chance to learn more about local cultural heritage. Xérès, flamenco and a passion for horses are all on display.
  • Feria de Pedro Romero in Ronda: the only festival in the world to celebrate a bullfighter. The traditional Corrida Goyesca is unique bullfight show held in the amazing Plaza de la Real Maestranza de Caballería.
  • Embrujo Andalusí in Carratraca: in the Málaga province, there are actually two festivals. One commemorates the old Al-Andalus and the other is Luna Mora in Guaro, which also draws on local heritage and involves lots of music.
  • *The Bienal de Flamenco in Seville: throughout September, the city showcases its top flamenco artists.
Walk around the towns and villages near the Resort, and you can visit lots of markets. These sell culinary specialities and traditional colourful fabrics! Want to arrange your trips out? Talk to our G.Os®!

3 - Andalusian culture

tapas sevillle

Andalusian gastronomic delights

Tapas on the beach!
One of the typical Andalusian dishes is eaten at the bar. When you order a coffee, a lemonade or a cocktail, you'll also be given a portion of tapas.
Traditionally, you eat and drink like this throughout the evening. They call it "tapeando", going from tapas bar to tapas bar. But why are you served food and drink this way? Legend has it that King Alfonso XIII stopped off one day at an inn near Cádiz, where he asked for wine and had a slice of ham on the glass. The innkeeper justified this by using the ham as a "lid" (tapas in Spanish).

According to another Andalusian tradition, farmers regularly ate and drank small amounts to keep up their strength.

The Tapas Trail

Today, this tradition has developed into a whole wealth of gastronomic tourism. When you visit a town, look at the tapas menu at each bar. Some serve specific food with your drink. You can either eat your free tapas with each drink you buy at a new bar, or order a tasting selection.

This way of exploring Andalusian gastronomy is popular in many villages, including Frigiliana, which has its own festival. The Tapas Trail is a gastronomic tourist route you won't want to miss!
But you can also enjoy a platter of cold meats and a tapas selection at the Resort. By the Lagoon Pool, savour flavours carefully chosen by our chefs to tickle your taste buds before soaking your feet in the clear waters of the pool.
In September, hold off normality with a Club Med holiday!
